ok, so I work at Sports Authority. we had this manager who has just been on edge for about a few months now. he has just been acting kinda weird, and most of us just figured he had stress at home or something. in retrospect, he had been doing some strange things at work. a lil thing here...a lil thing there. nothing too major, and had been having small run ins with other managers and other employees. hes a bit set in his ways, so we figured....no big deal.

then comes this past wednesday. within 15 minutes of being in the store he is in a shouting match with another manager. the other manager, actually goes into the store managers office and writes the store manager a note, saying one of them had to go. if the one manager was not fired.....he would be leaving.

within the next hour, he was merchandising some swim gear in our watersports aisle.....with one of our merch guys. hes standng there, talking and working...drops everything, goes to a phone, pages our recieving manager to the aisle...and when the recieving manager gets there, the guy says, "so do you plan on working anymore freight today, or are you going to stand there and let him do your job?" (pointing at the merch guy.) later on in the day, about 1:30, he gets into an arguement with one of our cashiers. leading to the cashier to leave. he just clocked out and left.

ok, by this time i have left and gone home. i was like WTF....but whatever. so. i come into work on thursday, and was talking to the recieving manager, and just discussing all the weird stuff that had happened the previous day....about an hour goes by, and the store manager come in. pages everyone in the building to the front of the store. (we where not open yet.)

and he says, "we had an incident in our store yesterday." the manager that had been acting weird.....took a screwdriver and stabbed the one manager that he had a fight with, in the right shoulder blade.

the guy was standing in front of a register printing out our to the hour sales, our 3 o'clock read. when out of nowhere the other manager charges him from behind and stabs him in the back.

luckily our fitness specialist was standing like four feet away, and was able to knock the screwdriver out of his hand, and get him a bear hug. the guy was yelling and screaming about wanting to kill the other manager. they drug him off and locked him in the store managers office. like 8 cops showed up, guns drawn....and hauled the guy off in cuffs. appearently the guy is sitting in jail, charged with assualt with a deadly weapon, and attempted murder. WTF!!!!!!

just crazy stuff going on. dude snapped while at work, and put a screwdriver in a co-workers shoulder.

luckily he hit the shoulder blade, and the screwdriver only went in like an inch. other wise that could have been some seriously bad stuff........

all of the other stuff was just verbal run-ins. at one point in the middle of January there was a like a four day stretch he was no where to be found. didnt answer any calls, no-showed for work.

i was talking to one of our cashiers today, and he said the guy used to stand up front and just complain about other managers who didnt do anything, and how everyone else in the store was lazy. while he is standing in the front of the store doing nothing....

about a month ago, he came up front and as he was leaving he was ranting about two of the managers where ass's, back stabbers, and how you couldnt trust them....one of the ones he was talking about was the one he stabbed.....it its all come up in the last....6 months or so. its weird becuase it was right after he made manager.

heck a weird story. only thing i have had with him personally. was last year we went to Big Bear for ski tech training. just him and i. we got up to Big Bear at like 4:30...get checked into our room. about 5, i told him was planning on getting dinner about 6, and asked if he wanted to join. all he asked was when we had to meet everyone else in the morning (every store in the district sent two people.) i told him 8. he packed his back pack, put on his jacket, and took off. i didnt see him til 7:30 the next morning in the hotel lobby. and it had to be in the 20's up there. i have confronted him about some paper work he filled out inncorrectly, and he reminded me he was a manager and i was not. so i went to his boss and had it taken care of. but for the most part.....i just avoided him.

the guy is screwed. he'll be in jail for a while. its just weird. i have known this guy for three years, and he just has fallen apart and eventually snapped in the last 6 months or so.

he was released that night.

the screwdriver only went in about an inch i guess....it hit bone and stopped, and the guy got grabbed before he had a chance to hit him again.

the guy who got stabbed, didnt even realize it. he thought the guy just hit him, he didnt know he got stabbed until someone told him.

I read that you have known this guy for at least 3 years. I have to ask you how his behavior was in the past. Since he has been hired into your company, has he had consistent behavior? If the behavior has been questionable, why was he hired? How did he get promoted? I know the environment that you are in. Many years ago, I used to be management when i was one of the executives in a major department store. I ran a $4 million Department(volume)with about 30 employees under me. There were like 27 of us. Then there were 6 divisionals,Hr,Ops, then General Manager. Sometimes the things that go on there will make you go nuts. If this guys was on edge, then somebody must have seen signs earlier.

It is a good thing that no one got SERIOUSLY hurt or killed. A lot of companies have what is called "employee assistance program" This handles stuff like AA, Counseling, Divorce, etc. For what it's worth that manager now has been terminated and separated in addition to being under arrest. I don't know the laws in California, but even if the manager who was stabbed does not press charges, the State will. I'm holding my tongue from being totally critical of the company you are working in, but i must say that HR or at least the fellow managers must have some kind of documentation of past behaviors. I don't know if any corrective action has been done in the past. Surely his superiors must have coached, counseled and challenged him in the past. Behavior that is totally unacceptable and unstable is bad for business.
SI like any other business would be very interested in the bottom line $$$ to go along with customer service scores and surveys from customers. Good luck and be careful Bernie. Even if you have had minimal contact with this individual does not mean he won't go after you. (If he is unstable, then there is no rhyme or reason to what he may do.) And since he WAS management, I'm sure he has access or had access to personal information like Addresses. Trust me, Obtaining that info can be done. Watch your back Bern, Be careful dude.

Ibar....basically. he has been normal. real quite and real introverted. but was always a hard worker. he was a lead for a year and a half. and just made manager about 6 months ago. all this stuff started changing about the time he made manager. there has been some studd documented. just dont know what actions they have taken. though the Regions HR director is based in our store, so im sure policy was followed on everything. no one ever expected this irrational of behavior out of him. yes, he had verbal run-ins. but nothing had never be physical. hell. the three of us. the stabber, the stabee, and myself all played on a softball team together a year or so ago.

thanks :IslandGirl:....

Do you think that perhaps something illness wise could have happened to him. Some people are affected later in life. WOW that is just scarey. You can just never be too careful ya know.

I am glad the other manager is doing well but I'm sure there will be some hidden demons he will have to deal with for a long time.

yeah....the big thing is, we dont know what set him off. as always there are murmurings going around. people saying, "i think he was on something." wondering whether or not it was stress. or if he is just mentally ill. or what. we dont know really. im sure it will come out eventually. but who know.

the guy who got stabbed, i think he will be fine. he has gone through a lot in his life. he has had major kidney issues, i pretty sure he only has one. his father died tragically when he was a teenager. im positive he will be fine, not only physically, but mentally as well. hell i heard him make a screwdriver joke yesterday.

Glad you turned out OK Bernie...or did you? ;)

define "ok."

yes, i did not get stabbed. but i know if you can ever define me as OK.
